Dear Valued Consumer:
At American Biophysics Corp., maker of Mosquito Magnet® insect trap products, we recognize the importance of safety as an essential concern in the manufacturing of all our products.
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), we are voluntarily replacing the "L"-shaped Quick-Clear Valve Adapter (shown below), a maintenance accessory provided with certain Mosquito Magnet® Defender, Freedom, Liberty, and Commercial Pro model insect traps. Consumers should not use this accessory to perform the Quick-Clear maintenance procedure.
The adapter has one end made of brass with threading to connect to a Schrader valve on the fuel line of an insect trap product. The other end of the adapter is made of black plastic and has a brass insert to attach to a carbon dioxide (CO2) cartridge.
When used to inject pressurized CO2 gas to clean a clogged fuel line in certain Mosquito Magnet®® insect traps, this adapter may leak or break apart at the "elbow" joint between the brass and plastic portions, possibly striking and injuring nearby persons or leaking pressurized CO2 gas that may freeze exposed skin.
Eleven people have reported being struck by broken adapters, and three have reported minor irritation from leaking pressurized CO2 gas.
The adapter was included as a maintenance accessory item only in newly manufactured and retrofitted Defender, Freedom, Liberty, and Commercial Pro Mosquito Magnet® brand insect traps made from approximately October 2002 through November 2003. The traps were sold through home centers, hardware stores, industrial suppliers, online retailers and mail-order catalogs. If your trap contains a rechargeable battery, it is not affected by this recall.
Consumers should not use the "L"-Shaped Quick-Clear Valve Adapter on a Mosquito Magnet® insect trap. The CPSC will monitor the effectiveness of this recall program.
